In the Central Valley, your cooling system works harder than almost anything else on your car — and when it fails, it can take the whole engine with it. Overheating is one of the fastest ways to turn a routine repair into a catastrophic one. At DADS, we find and fix cooling problems before they cook your engine: leaks, a tired radiator, a failing water pump, a stuck thermostat. We’ll pressure-test the system, show you the real cause, and give you an honest estimate first. A cooling problem is one of the few car troubles where minutes truly matter — the gap between a simple hose replacement and a cracked cylinder head often comes down to how soon you catch it and how you react. That’s why we’d rather inspect your system in spring than see it towed in during the first heat wave. We’ve kept Madera engines from overheating for more than 25 years, right here on W Kennedy.
What your cooling system does — and why it fails
Your cooling system’s whole job is to pull heat away from the engine and keep it in a safe temperature range. Coolant circulates through the engine and the radiator, pushed by the water pump and regulated by the thermostat, with hoses tying it all together and a pressurized cap holding it in. Any one weak link — a cracked hose, a leaking radiator, a worn pump, a stuck thermostat, a bad cap — can let temperatures climb fast. Because so many parts share the load, pinpointing the real cause takes a proper pressure test and inspection, not a guess.
Warning signs you shouldn’t ignore
An overheating engine rarely gives no warning. Catch these early and you usually avoid the big repair:
- The temperature gauge climbing toward hot, or a hot-engine warning light
- Green, orange or pink coolant puddles under the car
- Steam or a sweet smell from under the hood
- The heater blowing cold, or the AC struggling
- Low coolant that keeps needing to be topped off
- The engine running hotter than normal in traffic or on grades

Why Central Valley heat is so hard on cooling systems
Madera gives a cooling system almost no mercy. Triple-digit summer days mean the system runs near its limit for months, and sitting in Highway 99 traffic or crawling up to the foothills and lakes with the AC blasting piles on even more heat. That constant thermal stress ages hoses, radiators and water pumps faster than in cooler climates, and it’s exactly why we see so many heat-related failures locally. The flip side is useful to you: we know where these systems tend to give out around here, so a cooling inspection before summer is some of the cheapest insurance you can buy for your engine.

Overheating: what to do, and what not to do
If your temperature gauge swings toward hot, how you react in the next two minutes can be the difference between a hose and a whole engine. Turn off the air conditioning immediately to take load off the engine, and turn the heater to full hot — counterintuitive as it feels, the heater core acts as a second small radiator and pulls real heat out of the engine. Find a safe place to pull over and shut the engine off; idling a hot engine just keeps making heat. What you should not do is open the radiator cap on a hot engine — the system is pressurized and the coolant is scalding, and it can spray. Let everything cool completely before anyone checks levels. Above all, don’t try to “make it home” on a hot engine; overheating damage is cumulative and happens fast, and a warped cylinder head or a blown head gasket costs many times what the original leak would have. Once it’s cool, have the car brought in so we can pressure-test the system and find the real cause. A little prevention avoids the whole scenario: have the cooling system inspected before summer, keep the coolant fresh and at the correct mix, replace aging hoses and a tired radiator cap before they fail, and pay attention to the first signs — a sweet smell, a low reservoir, a gauge that sits a little higher than it used to. In Central Valley heat, a healthy cooling system isn’t optional equipment.
Why Madera drivers trust DADS to keep them cool
An overheating engine is a situation where honest, fast diagnosis really matters — and that’s our strong suit. We’re a family-owned shop on W Kennedy, and here’s what you get when you bring us a cooling concern:
- An ASE-Certified Shop — our owner, Chris Donovan, is an ASE Master Technician
- A pressure test and real diagnosis — we find the leak before quoting a repair
- A clear, written estimate before any work begins — you approve it first
- A courtesy vehicle inspection with each visit
- Repairs backed by a 1-year warranty
- Same-day service available — just call to book
- Financing available when you need it
If your temperature gauge is creeping up or you’ve spotted coolant on the driveway, don’t wait — heat damage is cumulative. Because the cooling system shares belts and hoses with the AC system and relies on aging rubber, a cooling check often overlaps with belts & hoses and our diagnostics. For seasonal tips see our car care guides, and the nonprofit Car Care Council is a trustworthy resource. Call DADS or book online before the next heat wave.
