Drivetrain Repair in Madera, CA
Clicking in turns, a clunk on takeoff, a vibration at speed? We trace drivetrain noises to the real part — CV axles, driveshaft, differential — before we quote.
Courtesy Vehicle Inspection With Each Visit
Every service at DADS includes a courtesy vehicle inspection, plus a clear, written estimate before any work begins — you approve it before we start.
Your drivetrain is everything that delivers the engine’s power to the wheels — and when part of it wears out, you usually hear it or feel it before anything else tells you. A clicking on turns, a clunk when you shift, a vibration that builds with speed: those are the drivetrain’s way of asking for attention. At DADS, we diagnose and repair the whole drivetrain, from CV axles to the driveshaft, differential and transfer case, and we pin down the real source of a noise or vibration before we quote. We’ve kept Madera cars — front-wheel, rear-wheel, AWD and 4WD — moving for more than 25 years, right here on W Kennedy.
What the drivetrain actually is
The drivetrain is the chain of parts that carries power from the transmission to the wheels. Exactly what’s in it depends on how your car is laid out. Front-wheel-drive cars use CV (constant-velocity) axles with flexible joints that let the wheels steer and move while still driving the car. Rear-wheel-drive vehicles use a driveshaft, universal joints and a rear differential. All-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive add a transfer case and extra axles and differentials to send power to all four corners. Each of those parts can wear, leak or fail, and each has its own telltale symptom — which is why identifying what’s actually making the noise is the key to fixing it right the first time.
Signs of a drivetrain problem
Drivetrain trouble is usually something you can hear or feel:
- A clicking or popping noise when turning (a classic worn CV joint)
- A clunk when shifting into gear or when accelerating from a stop
- A vibration that gets worse as you speed up
- A humming, whining or growling that changes with speed
- Grease flung around a front wheel (a torn CV boot)
- Fluid leaking from a differential or transfer case

CV axles and that clicking on turns
On front-wheel-drive cars — which is most cars on the road — the most common drivetrain repair is the CV axle. Each axle has joints protected by rubber boots packed with grease, and when a boot cracks or tears, that grease slings out and dirt and water get in, and the joint wears out. The giveaway is a rhythmic clicking or popping that you hear when turning, especially sharper turns, that speeds up as you go faster. Caught early — when it’s just a torn boot — it can sometimes be a smaller repair; left too long, the whole axle needs replacing, and a severely worn CV joint can eventually fail completely and leave you stranded. If you hear clicking in turns, it’s worth getting looked at sooner rather than later.
Driveshaft, u-joints and vibration
On rear-wheel-drive and many trucks and AWD vehicles, a spinning driveshaft carries power to the rear, connected by universal joints (u-joints) that allow for movement. When a u-joint wears, you’ll often feel a vibration that builds with speed or a clunk when you take off, and you may hear a squeak at low speed. A worn driveshaft or u-joint isn’t something to ignore, because a failure there can be sudden and serious. We inspect the driveshaft, u-joints and center support, and balance and repair as needed, so a vibration you’ve been living with gets traced to its real cause — which, since vibration can also come from tires, wheels or the suspension, is exactly where careful diagnosis earns its keep.
Differentials and transfer cases
The differential lets your drive wheels turn at different speeds through a corner, and on AWD and 4WD vehicles the transfer case splits power between front and rear. These are tough, fluid-filled components, and their most important maintenance is simple: keep the fluid clean and at the right level. Neglected fluid is the usual reason a differential starts to whine, growl or howl, and running one low or dry can destroy it. We service differential and transfer-case fluid on schedule, check for leaks, and diagnose noises before they turn into major repairs. If you tow or haul up to the foothills and lakes, or drive a 4WD hard, staying on top of this fluid is especially worth it.

Drivetrain vs. transmission — where the line is
People often lump the drivetrain and the transmission together, and they are closely related, but it helps to know the difference when something’s wrong. The transmission selects the gears; the drivetrain carries that power the rest of the way to the wheels. A vibration or clunk you blame on the transmission sometimes lives in a CV axle or u-joint instead, and vice versa. That overlap is exactly why we diagnose rather than assume — our full diagnostics sort out whether a symptom is coming from the transmission, the drivetrain, or even the suspension, so you fix the right part instead of the obvious-looking one.
